Nieuwe bestraling kan erecties bij prostaatkanker beter behouden

Tijdens de behandeling voor prostaatkanker kunnen patiënten last hebben van erectieproblemen als gevolg van de bestraling. Voor deze patiënten zijn er nu goede eerste tussentijdse resultaten van de ERECT-trial. In deze studie laten onderzoekers van het UMC Utrecht zien dat een precisiebestraling met de MR-Linac zenuwen en bloedvaten rondom de prostaat kan sparen. Hierdoor neemt de kans op het behouden van erecties toe.

Two previously unknown bacterial species identified from patients with inflammatory bowel disease

Investigators at UMC Utrecht and Yale University (USA) have isolated and characterized two new bacterial species from patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). The previously unknown bacterial species, which were named Allobaculum mucilyticum and Allobaculum fili, are isolated from the intestinal microbiota from two different patients and are the first members of the Allobaculum genus found in humans. In-depth characterization revealed that the strains were highly efficient in breaking down the protective mucus layer of the gut and provoked potent immune responses. These findings highlight the potential role for bacteria in the pathogenesis of IBD and may contribute to future preventive therapy.

People with Cystic Fibrosis (CF) have their own views on scientific research into the disease that affects their airways and digestive system. When asked what kind of scientific research they consider important, projects emerge with great impact for those patients themselves, observes Jacquelien Noordhoek, director of the Dutch Cystic Fibrosis Foundation (NCFS). KIKA grant brain tumor research in children
