Nieuwe bestraling kan erecties bij prostaatkanker beter behouden

Tijdens de behandeling voor prostaatkanker kunnen patiënten last hebben van erectieproblemen als gevolg van de bestraling. Voor deze patiënten zijn er nu goede eerste tussentijdse resultaten van de ERECT-trial. In deze studie laten onderzoekers van het UMC Utrecht zien dat een precisiebestraling met de MR-Linac zenuwen en bloedvaten rondom de prostaat kan sparen. Hierdoor neemt de kans op het behouden van erecties toe.

Treating artery stenosis with sound waves

By aiming high-frequency sound waves at a narrowing – a plaque – in the artery, it is broken down layer by layer. That is the theory behind the Hifu treatment (High Intensity Focused Ultrasound). This method has recently been successfully tested in patients with artery stenosis in the groin. This non-invasive operation can be an alternative to patients in the long term to surgery or stent placement.
